Google invests $75M in A24 to build AI tools for cinema
Google announced a $75 million investment in A24, the independent studio behind *Everything Everywhere All at Once* (2023 Best Picture Oscar), *Civil War*, *Hereditary* and *Midsommar*. The stated goal — per a joint statement in The Hollywood Reporter — is to build AI tools specifically for filmmakers. Not for mass automation, but to amplify the work of screenwriters, production designers and editors.
Why this investment is a market signal
A24 is not a random studio. Since its founding in 2012, it built a reputation for betting on auteur vision even on low budgets — the opposite of the Marvel/Disney industrial franchise model. Seeing A24 open to AI tools is not a contradiction: it is pragmatism.
The key signal is not the dollar amount. $75 million is small change for Google. The signal is which studio accepted this partnership. If A24 — with its strongly auteur identity — is willing to incorporate AI into its workflow, the argument that "AI and auteur cinema are incompatible" just got harder to sustain.
What the tools should do
Based on the statement and reporting by The Hollywood Reporter, the tools will focus on three areas:
1. Script development and pre-visualization — narrative structure analysis, character consistency, storyboard generation from scene descriptions
2. Production analysis — shoot schedule optimization, scene-level budgeting, location time prediction
3. Assisted post-production — color grading with aesthetic references, low-light noise removal, automatic cut-to-music sync
What is explicitly NOT in scope: synthetic actors, AI stunt doubles, autonomous screenwriting.
The industry debate: WGA, SAG-AFTRA and the post-strike context
Any Hollywood AI announcement must be read in the context of the 2023 strike. The WGA issued a cautious note acknowledging that "AI tools that amplify the writer's work, with transparency and within the current agreements, are within what we negotiated."
